Job Summary

To provide assistance to the Associate Directors and Director of the School of MCB regarding curricular oversight and management of the development, delivery, evaluation/assessment and improvement of all aspects of curricula, instructional activities and personnel for the Instructional Program within the School of MCB.

Administration/Leadership

  • Provide strategic input, oversight and assistance with all operational aspects of all curricula and instructional activities within the School of MCB, including serving as lead supervisor for teaching and instructional personnel in the undergraduate degree programs.
  • Provide input and assistance with implementing strategic plans for the development, delivery, evaluation, assessment, and continuing improvement of course delivery, the degree programs and academic services for all existing and new School degree programs and internal and external instructional training programs.

Direct the hiring, supervision and evaluation of instructional personnel and students in the Instructional Programs of the School, including the hiring, training, management and evaluation of all academic professionals, specialized faculty, course coordinators, graduate teaching assistants, laboratory preparatory staff, interns for curriculum office support, student work study and hourly office workers in the instructional program office.

  • Provide input and govern with signature authority the use of funds to meet the curricular programming and instructional delivery objectives of the Instructional Program in both the short- and long-term for all degree programs in the School.
  • Co-direct the coordination of the planning, organization and execution of all MCB recruitment, graduation, and career development events, such as workshops, conferences, New Student Welcome, Convocation, School and LAS Honors Ceremonies, Undergraduate Research Symposia, Graduation events, Homecoming and Alumnae events, etc.
  • Provide input and assistance with implementing strategic plans for the development of new curricular programs that are tailored to the needs of our students and faculty, including establishing new relationships with other key units and leading conversations regarding creating/setting vision for existing and new curricular and educational enrichment programs and experiential learning and research experiences.

Provide visionary input to the university STEM teaching and learning community, serving as liaison with other instructors and teaching units within the School, LAS, and other units and officeson Campus (Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, Office of Undergraduate Research, ATLAS, and Career Center, etc.), fostering relationships that serve to meet the learning outcomes and educational enrichment goals of the School of MCB and the Campus.

Instruction (Traditional/Non-Traditional)

  • Oversee and provide instructional support to faculty, instructors, and student teaching assistants with regard to writing and evaluating course learning outcomes; writing course syllabi; writingand executing lesson plans; writing assessment instruments; writing, editing and updating course laboratory manuals, developing laboratory exercises; delivering, reflecting, assessing and improving courses to align with overall learning outcomes at the course, curriculum, and degree levels; issuing final grades; and collaborating on the development of online courses.
  • Oversee and support development, implementation, and assessment of courses, curricula and instructional programs within the School and ensuring alignment with LAS and Campus learning outcomes, including assisting with accreditation reports and assessment materials.
  • Oversee the coordination of course delivery, including scheduling of teaching classrooms, management of enrollments in courses, reserving exam rooms, maintaining course laboratory equipment and classroom technologies, providing accommodations for students when necessary (i.e. make-up classes, DRES, illness, oversee evening exams, etc.), and providing course and instructional resources.
  • Serve as facilitator and presenter for the Summer Institute for Scientific Teaching for STEM Education and other similar teaching workshops, to provide guidance to faculty, instructors, andteacher assistants regarding development and incorporation of active-learning strategies and backward design approaches for classroom teaching.

Instructional Implementation

  • Oversee the procurement of all materials required for courses within the School, adhering to designated course budgets, maintaining procurement records and inventories, organizing materials, and managing personnel duties.
  • Provide instructional support to faculty, instructors, and student teaching assistants with regard to coordinating student registration, administration of exams, tracking student absences and grades for courses.
  • Serve on and/or participate in School, LAS and Campus committees and programs that promote academic success, retention in the major, and overall curricular and experiential learning excellence for students in our degree programs, such as serving as MCB representative on the School of MCB Student Awards Committee, Emerging Women Leaders, Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) and Evaluation Committee, Selection Committee for School Scholarships and/or Fellowships, and other related committees or working groups.
  • Represent the School in meetings and at conferences related to curriculum and instruction, assessment, and management of classroom technology and teaching evaluations.

Develop and coordinate comprehensive assessment plans for conducting research related to curriculum development and improvement, student retention and graduation rates, and learning outcome success.

Academic Advising, Mentoring, and Student Academic Recruitment

  • Educate prospective and current students regarding requirements of the curricula and the varied pathways to meeting requirements of the degree program through individual conferences and meetings, special programs and workshops in areas such as undergraduate research, articulation of education abroad, internships, and fellowships.
  • Provide interpretation and application of academic and campus policy, as well as best practices guided by learning outcomes, in providing guidance to faculty, instructors, advisors, career counselors, and other instructional program personnel.
  • Lead and oversee meetings with prospective, admitted, and transfer students and their families, providing information regarding course and curriculum content, requirements, and learning resources.
  • Provide curricular input for the recruitment and retention of high-achieving and motivated students into the majors and honors programs.

Other Assigned Duties

  • Perform other assigned, instruction-related duties, as needed, to ensure the smooth running of the instructional program.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology or closely related field. 
  • 10 years of professional experience in higher education including experience in curriculum development and instructional oversight. 
  • Experience in development and assessment of curricula with active-learning and evidence-based learning outcomes. 
  • Supervisory experience in leading a team of 5+ instructional professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or closely related field, higher education, teaching, or closely related field. 
  • Experience in strategic management and goal setting and implementation in higher education.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in course and curriculum development within an academic program.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to concerns of undergraduate students, faculty, staff, administrators, and other constituents.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $75,000 – $83,000.  Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
