Director of Curriculum Development Description

The Director of Curriculum Development reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and is responsible for the strategic oversight, design, implementation, and evaluation of all curricula. The role involves ensuring that academic programs are rigorous, relevant, and aligned with the institution’s goals, industry standards, and accreditation requirements. This role works closely with the faculty development team, instructional designers, and academic deans to create effective, outcomes-focused programs that support student success.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Design and Development: Lead the creation, mapping, and revision of academic programs, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards, institutional mission, and industry trends.
  • Collaboration with Instructional Design: Partner with instructional designers to integrate effective adult learning strategies, learning technologies, and accessible course materials into the curriculum, ensuring optimal learning experiences across in-person, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Program Evaluation: Assess curriculum effectiveness through data analysis, student outcomes, and feedback from faculty, students, and employers, implementing improvements as needed.
  • Faculty Development Team: Collaborate with the faculty development team to identify training needs and implement programs targeted at innovative teaching methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and best practices in curriculum delivery.
  • Compliance and Accreditation: Ensure all programs meet regional and national accreditation requirements, preparing necessary documentation and reports.
  • Professionalism: Maintain professional standards, attitude, and performance levels to ensure effective, safe, ethical, and legal performance in all aspects of the position. This includes giving serious consideration to all forms of informal and formal performance evaluation (e.g., student evaluations, classroom visitation, annual performance reviews, clinical site evaluation) and seeking methods for improvement while striving for academic excellence.

Requirements

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field (required)
  • PhD or EdD in Curriculum and Instruction (strongly preferred)

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years progressive leadership experience in curriculum development preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated success leading curriculum projects, including design, implementation, and assessment.
  • Experience collaborating with academic program managers, instructional designers, and faculty development teams to develop academic programs.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and compliance in higher education.
  • Proficiency working with Canvas and instructional design tools.

Preferred:

  • 7+ years of progressive leadership in curriculum development and instructional design in a higher education setting.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Deep knowledge of curriculum design principles, instructional design methodologies, and adult learning strategies.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with academic program leaders and instructional designers.
  • Proficiency in data analysis to evaluate program outcomes and drive evidence-based decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Expertise in current trends in higher education, including online learning, instructional technology, accreditation standards, and innovative teaching methodologies.
  • Proficiency in using Canvas to support curriculum development and delivery.
