In support of this mission, the Instructional Designer, College of Professional Studies supports the design, creation, and evaluation of online courses in consultation with faculty and program directors. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Instructional Design and collaborates with the instructional design and wider academic programs team to support development and continuous improvement of online degree programs at the college under direction of the Director, Academic Programs and Experiential Learning. 

Responsibilities include:

• Collaborate with faculty subject matter experts and program directors to design and develop engaging, accessible online courses.
• Apply instructional design models to create course materials that support learning outcomes.
• Develop interactive learning activities, multimedia content, and assessments aligned with course objectives.
• Ensure course design aligns with Quality Matters (QM) standards and institutional guidelines for online and hybrid learning.
• Advise on the integration of pedagogical tools and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
• Review emerging trends, research, and technologies in instructional design and higher education.

This position performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This is a hybrid position with some days remote and some days in-person in Arlington, Virginia or Washington, DC or other area centers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

To thrive in this role, the ideal candidate will bring a blend of the following strengths and experiences:

• At least two years of professional experience related to course development and/or teaching, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Master’s degree in education, instructional design, or a closely related field preferred.
• Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard) and other educational technologies (e.g., Canva, video editing tools, screen capture software, interactive content platforms).
• Knowledge of accessibility standards, Quality Matters, and/or adult learning theory preferred,
• Ability to be proactive and highly organized. Strong project management skills are highly desired. Able to learn and implement tools to improve these skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and cross-functional teams.

Hiring Range: $57,553.66 – $79,165.63
