Job Description:

Basic Function and Responsibilities:

Under the leadership of the Director of Online Curriculum and Instruction, the Instructional Designer (ID) for Online Curriculum and Instruction enhances the quality of all online courses at Oakton by working closely with faculty from the design phase to finished product. The Instructional Designer is the design expert who guides the subject matter expert (SME) in the development and refinement of courses that adhere to Oakton College standards in quality online course delivery in a variety of modalities.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Actively reach out to the faculty to assist in designing high-quality web-based learning environments that consider accessibility, universal design principles, and equity-minded pedagogy.
  • Serve as a Quality Matters (QM) liaison to the QM organization, certification leader, and implementer of the Oakton QM initiative.
  • Develop multi-media instructional tutorials and learning objects for use in faculty development.
  • Evaluate the instructional effectiveness and quality of technology-enhanced courses
  • Design and evaluate online instructional resources.
  • Collaborate with other members of the online learning team, particularly the Principal Manager of Online Learning Outcomes and Achievement.
  • Conduct design-related faculty professional development workshops and training.
  • Collaborate with other entities of the campus, such as Curriculum and Instruction, the Center for Teaching Innovation, Information Technology, and academic departments to improve teaching and learning educational technologies.
  • The ID participates in regional/national organizations and researches to stay current with trends and best practices in online learning.

Requirements:

Qualifications and Working Conditions:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Instructional Technologies, Library Science, Media Arts or related field from an accredited college or university is required.
  • One-year of experience in related work environment with distance education technologies and instructional design.
  • Experience in an online learning environment either as an Instructor of Record, Teaching Assistant, or a student.
  • Working knowledge of Desire2Learn or other online learning management system.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies utilized in online and blended learning environments.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility issues and Universal Design.
  • Solid understanding of instructional design and learning theories and ability to communicate them effectively to faculty.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to supervise and track multiple ongoing projects simultaneously and independently.
  • Excellent public speaking skills, including the ability to provide training sessions for large and small groups.
  • Proficient user of multi-media authoring tools, video and audio editing skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cordial and effective communications with faculty, departments, colleges and other campus stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience in related work environment with distance education technologies and instructional design
  • Knowledge of multi-modality delivery (synchronous, hybrid, HyFlex)
  • Knowledge or implementation of online teaching standards (such as Quality Matters)

Physical Demands:    

Work is performed in a general office environment. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.

Additional Information:

Supervision received: 

Functional supervision is received from the Principal Manager of Online Learning Outcomes and Achievement.  Administrative supervision is received from the Director of Online Curriculum and Instruction.

Supervision exercised:  None

Out-of-State Employment Defined:

Oakton College’s primary location of operation is in the state of Illinois. An “out-of-state employee” is defined as an employee of Oakton College whose primary work location is outside of the state of Illinois. State taxes, employment tax, and worker’s compensation provisions vary from state to state and require payroll compliance with these various rules.

Allowable States for Out-of-State Employment:

All employees must maintain their primary residence in Illinois, Indiana, or a reciprocal state with Illinois. Reciprocal states include Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Illinois has tax agreements with these reciprocal states. Employees may have their primary residence in Indiana since Indiana is adjacent to Illinois.

Salary: $60,189

Hours:  Monday – Friday 8:15 am – 5:00 pm 

Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have a hybrid schedule option available after 30 working days.
