Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking a Learning Experience Designer to join the Digital Education team. Digital Education (formerly E-Learning) collaborates with all units in the Office of Academic Affairs as well as across the college to support faculty and students as they prepare for and embark upon digital teaching and learning experiences. Digital Education encourages and facilitates transformative online pedagogies and technologies that enable all BMCC students to succeed.

The Learning Experience Designer will partner with faculty and academic support staff in the design, development, and implementation of digital learning experiences for BMCC students. The position reports to the Director of Digital Education and will collaborate closely with other departments across the college to create and support engaging digital learning environments grounded in current theories of pedagogy and applied across instructional modalities. Additionally, this person will:

  • Collaborate with the Digital Education Director and CETLS (Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship) Director to design and facilitate professional development experiences for faculty.
  • In conjunction with the Digital Education team, IRT (Information Resources and Technology), and CETLS, support and advise faculty in matching their use of digital tools and platforms to their teaching and learning goals.
  • Conduct outreach to academic departments about strategies for expanding and enriching digital education within their departments.
  • Provide guidance to faculty reviewers of online courses in utilizing a course evaluation rubric and other forms of assessment.
  • Review courses using a design rubric (such as OSCQR), and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Participate in the development of online degree programs, in partnership with CUNY Online, BMCC academic departments, and BMCC academic support units.
  • Contribute to digital technology projects that strengthen the academic community, such as the BMCC OpenLab.
  • Inform and take part in strategic planning initiatives at BMCC and CUNY related to the expansion and enrichment of online learning.
  • Orient faculty and staff to the LMS (learning management system) and guide them through system changes.
  • Advise on configuration of the LMS (including templates, LTIs, and system defaults) to help match the needs of BMCC faculty, students, and academic support staff.
  • Train and support faculty and other instructional staff in effective utilization of the LMS and other educational technologies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and six years’ relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience applying universal design for learning (UDL), asset-based pedagogies (e.g., culturally sustaining, trauma informed, and antiracist), open education, and alternative forms of assessment to course design and development.
  • Fluency with learning management and web conferencing tools.
  • Some experience with WordPress.
  • Experience with both synchronous and asynchronous online pedagogies.
  • Online teaching experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation And Benefits

Salary range is $91,922 – $99,185, Salary commensurate with education and experience.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
