Learning Management and Curriculum Architect

Are you a motivated and detail-oriented professional with a passion for leveraging technology to improve learning experiences? Penn Medicine is seeking a Learning Management and Curriculum Architect to join our team. This hybrid role blends technical expertise and instructional design to support and enhance our enterprise-wide learning ecosystem.

The ideal candidate brings strong analytical skills, innovative thinking, and a deep understanding of learning management systems (LMS). You’ll manage system configurations, develop dashboards and reports, support entity-level administrators, and consult with internal clients to align learning solutions with business goals. You must thrive as both an independent contributor and a collaborative team player.

Job Summary:

  • This position will serve in both a learning management and learning design capacity (~75% learning management; 25% learning design). The individual in this position will evaluate learning management needs of clients based on the client’s learning goals, and implement solutions to meet those needs. In the area of learning management, the Architect will have the ability to develop an in-depth proficiency with the LMS application and use available functionality to create course shells, curricula, assignments, and reports to meet client needs. The Architect will also provide high quality customer service to internal clients for technical support and customized solutions. In the area of learning design, this individual will work closely with the manager to develop proficiency in conceptualizing and designing engaging, creative, and interactive learning solutions in relation to learning management system operation and administration. The Architect will also be responsible for maintaining all LMS job-aids and tutorials, as well as train new LMS administrators at various levels and positions throughout Penn Medicine.

Responsibilities:

Learning System Administration:

  • Maintain vendor-hosted LMS platform including: system configurations and integrations, user permissions, user interface design, user provisioning and authentication tools (single-sign-on), system notifications, interfaces for content management, file transfers (user feeds, learning history feeds), as well as external integrations (Content Controller, RollCall, LinkedIn Learning, Healthstream, and others as needed).
  • Maintain and utilize additional environments (stage and sandbox) to perform training and testing for system updates prior to implementation in production.
  • Evaluate, test, and implement bi-annual system updates including creation and execution of testing procedures in collaboration with selected system users and administrators.
  • Develop custom reports and dashboards utilizing LMS tools as well as external tools (for example, Power BI).
  • Implement best practices for scalability, supportability, ease of maintenance, and system performance.
  • Translate highly technical specifications into clear non-technical requirements.
  • Recruit and oversee entity-level administrators to supplement LMS administration duties as needed.
  • Develop and implement maintenance procedures, monitor system health, gather system statistics, troubleshoot reported errors, and submit support tickets to SAP SuccessFactors as needed.
  • Create and maintain documentation and job-aids for learning system processes and provide training for learning system administrators at various levels throughout the health system.
  • Collaborate with internal and external IT resources and support personnel as needed.

Consultation/ Instructional Design:

  • Builds strong client relationships with entity educators and University counterparts
  • Consults with internal clients on their learning management needs and structures appropriate components within the learning management system, and other interfacing systems, to meet those needs
  • Consults with internal clients on their business, performance and learning goals to determine effective learning design recommendations
  • Create efficient and effective design strategies for curriculums and specific learning solutions
  • Recommends evaluation strategies to ensure learning, performance and business goals are met

Learning Management: 

  • Monitors and oversee LMS working with hosted vendor solution and internal HR and IS contacts
  • Serves as a central point of contact for decentralized LMS administrators
  • Serves as Tier III LMS support
  • Quality assurance oversight and testing Accountabilities
  • Consultation, oversight and on-going recommendations for LMS configuration and functionality
  • Researches, designs, develops, tests, troubleshoots, debugs, and implements learning management system changes.
  • Use of report writing tools such as Crystal or Power BI in the creation of ad hoc reports and dashboards
  • Develops eLearning content using multi-media and web authoring tools such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Captivate, Articulate, and other web development applications.

Project Management:

  • Responsible for executing large, complex information technology, learning management, curriculum, and assignment projects

Policies and Procedures: 

  • Develops and maintains LMS and eLearning systems processes, best-practices, guidelines and standards
  • Develops and maintains job-aids for all users of the learning management system, including end users, managers, and system administrators

Other:

  • Trains, coaches, and mentors assigned project team members and decentralized learning management administrators
  • May assist in the development and implementation of emergent education initiatives
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Required)
  • 10+ years of experience in a learning or learning technology field (Required)
  • 5+ years of project management experience (Required)
  • 1+ years of computer science, information technology, or equivalent experience (Required)
  • Master’s Degree (Preferred)

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Critical analytics, problem-solving, and business acumen skills
  •  Database knowledge and experience, including SQL coding and report development (BIRT, Business Objects, Crystal, Power BI, or other tools)
  •  A strong understanding of learning management and content management and HCM systems
  • Knowledge of multimedia and web authoring tools and techniques, such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe PhotoShop, Captivate, Articulate Suite and other design-related applications
  • Strong project management skills
  • An understanding of the quality assurance process
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team leader and team member
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
