Purpose:

The Online Education Coordinator, under the general supervision of the Associate Director of the Center for Academic Technologies (CAT), serves the campus in facilitating campus efforts to plan, develop, and analyze online education opportunities at California State University, Monterey Bay. This position entails leading a campus-wide online course quality peer review framework, driving initiatives to enhance online instruction, and supporting the university community in the design and development of online education programs. The Online Education Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing faculty development programs related to online education and online course delivery. This role requires close collaboration with faculty, staff, administrators, technical support staff, and campus service providers to create an innovative support infrastructure for distributed learning and online education programs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Quality Course Development: In concert with the subject matter experts and instructional designers, guide the development of engaging, comprehensive, and interactive online courses and programs using modern quality frameworks that meet the evolving needs of our diverse student body. Acts as the primary campus expert in online learning best practices.
  • Faculty Training and Support: Offers continuous training, mentorship, leadership, and support to faculty members, enabling them to effectively deliver online courses, leverage advanced tools and adapt to the new pedagogical demands of the digital age.
  • Online Program Design: Collaborates with stakeholders in the participatory governance process to facilitate the planning, development, and analysis of online education opportunities on campus.
  • Innovative Technologies: Explores and integrates new and advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and interactive learning platforms to enhance online learning experiences.
  • Research and Evaluation: Continually researches best practices in online education and assessing the effectiveness of our online courses and programs to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Compliance Alignment: Works with accreditation bodies and campus administration to ensure policies are developed and online offerings are aligned with standards and policies.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: 

Knowledge of: Information technology security, management systems and/or applications, including campus-wide systems and multimedia environments, access procedures, AV system, telephone services, networks, and/or databases; and training theory and practices demonstrated by an ability to develop and deliver technical training and user documentation.  

Ability to: apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support; integrate multiple applications and/or systems; and analyze data requirements and research data availability and access methods.  Proficiency in using standard software packages. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills in working with users to interpret needs and provide an appropriate solution.

Minimum Qualifications:  

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Specialized Skills:

  • Knowledge of online teaching and learning best practices, distributed learning pedagogies, faculty development practices
  • Understanding of faculty development practices and ability to conduct needs analyses
  • Understanding of current and emerging pedagogies and modalities used in higher education, specifically in distributed learning.
  • Functional knowledge of: Technologies that support instruction, such as interactive media, video, and graphic production.
  • Knowledge/certification in quality assurance for distributed learning (ex. Quality Matters, QLT), learning management system tools and design, media and graphic design production and editing.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a training or instructional environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accessibility requirements as they relate to course instruction and learning material development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that promote professionalism and mutual respect in all interactions. Ability to work effectively and interdependently in a diverse university environment. Ability to independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects. Exceptional ability to communicate in a professional, persuasive, and tactful manner both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated record of a strong customer service orientation. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications/Desirable Experience:

  • Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or closely related field and experience in one or a combination of the following: instructional and faculty development at the university level, experience in working in a college or university support service unit or other service-oriented organization, or experience in supporting or teaching in a distributed learning environment. Record of active participation in conferences and professional organizations related to the applications of instructional technology in higher education. 
  • Postsecondary teaching experience.
  • Ability to produce or remediate content for accessibility, including MS Office and Adobe Acrobat documents, and audio and video. 
  • Strong ability to determine needs/problems, analyze and provide appropriate solutions within operational guidelines, and to effectively document and communicate changes, solutions, and procedures. Ability to communicate with and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and members of the community in one-to-one or group settings. Strong personal initiative and ability to work reliably and independently with minimal supervision. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts and ideas to non-technical individuals.

Physical Environment:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
