Job Summary

The Senior Training & Instructional Design Specialist will design, develop and deliver exceptional education and training programs, curriculum, and materials that motivates, builds competencies, and improves individual performance; thus enabling the organization to execute on its strategic initiatives and deliver on our mission. This role will serve as instructional designer for customized and standardized training courses as well as facilitator for training courses offered through specific Memorial Hermann departments, including offerings targeted at enterprise-wide audiences. This position typically reports to the Director of the department/function.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelors degree required, preferably in related field such as OD, industrial psychology, education, communications, HR management or related field.  Masters degree preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: (None).

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in human resources or related field in developing, coordinating and delivering employee development programs for all levels of employees and management
  • Experience in a healthcare environment preferred
  • Excellent presentation skills to clearly convey complex blends of business and technical matters to a range of audiences, to articulate points clearly and concisely
  • Ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate)
  • Open to commuting between sites as needed (with mileage reimbursement)
  • Know the capabilities of various e-learning development tools and software (Captivate, Articulate, iSpring, Grovo, etc.);
  • Hands-on experience with Learning Management Software (LMS)
  • Knowledge of effective use of graphics and skilled at writing effective copy, instructional text, audio/video scripts
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities
  • Strong attention to detail and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to function effectively in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Capability to interact with individuals at all levels within an organization

Principal Accountabilities

Instructional Design and Development

  • Collaborates with various stakeholders across the Health System to conduct needs analysis to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities to enhance performance through additional training interventions.
  • Works with subject matter experts and leaders to establish training objectives and develop content that will lead to improved performance.
  • Designs programs in a variety of formats (e.g., instructor led, online, hybrid) using best practices.
  • Executes on instructional design plans, using visual design and multimedia development skills, to develop engaging and effective learning experiences (online, face-to-face, or print).
  • Reviews and updates existing curriculum and reinforce learning by developing supporting resources such as job aids, manager’s guide, online resources, etc.
  • Conducts formative and summative evaluation of instructional content and outcomes and makes needed changes based on findings.

Training Delivery and Evaluation

  • Facilitates training to various audiences (frontline employees to senior leadership) using proven adult learning principles to ensure engagement and a positive training outcomes.
  • Conducts Train-the-Trainer sessions and demonstrates best-in-class facilitation skills and techniques.
  • Collects assessment and client feedback data; analyzes to determine effectiveness of learning and development solutions; uses feedback and evaluation data to improve offerings.
  • Utilizes LMS to track and report attendance and training feedback.

Governance and Support

  • May participate in various System councils as required by discipline supported.
  • Develop and manage standards for training, ensuring all documentation, processes, and other deliverables across the learning solution disciplines meet these standards.
  • Provide instructional design consultation and support to those developing content within Memorial Hermann University.
  • Mentor new instructors, providing resources and guidance in effective teaching practice and recommending development opportunities where appropriate.

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Keeps abreast of competition, competitive issues, industry, and innovation in the field of instructional design and performance improvement.
  • Networks with external companies and vendors to stay abreast of emerging technologies and solutions.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
