The SPH-B Office of Online Education (OOE) Instructional Designer Associate plays a crucial role with responsibilities for the support of both the SPH-B OOE and the Marketing and Communications team’s core operational functions.

Department Specific Responsibilities
- Works in close collaboration with SPH-B OOE leadership and Marketing and Communications team, the SPH-B OOE Instructional Designer Associate will join an instructional consulting team that works with the School of Public Health-Bloomington staff, online graduate students, faculty members, and associate instructors.
- Under the supervision of SPH-B OOE leadership and the Marketing and Communications team, the SPH-B OOE Instructional Designer Associate consults with faculty and staff on a variety of digital resources and video production, training, student onboarding, course design issues, continuous improvement opportunities, identifying student learning outcomes, Quality Matters, competency-based education, fostering active and engaged learning, selecting and implementing appropriate instructional technologies, and assessing student learning.
- SPH-B OOE Instructional Designer Associate participates in the development of project planning and implementation.
- Works closely with the SPH-B OOE leadership, the Associate provides design estimates and documentation for these proposals. Tasks are varied, including just-in-time ID consultation (email, phone), workshops and presentations, development of asynchronous training programs, support on the design of student services online modules, and team-based design and development projects.
- SPH-B OOE Instructional Designer Associate will also work alongside the Marketing and Communications team to produce a variety of schoolwide videos, testimonials, and visual assets through post-production work.
- In close collaboration with the SPH-B OOE leadership, the SPH-B OOE Instructional Designer Associate will:
- Consults with faculty on course development and instructional strategies.
- Plays a supporting role in online instructional design consultation with faculty and school wide offices and initiatives. Assists on reviews of proposed instructional design approaches.
- Assists on the use and documentation of instructional design best practices for digital education.
- Consults with faculty and staff on a variety of course design issues, including identifying student learning outcomes, fostering active and engaged learning, selecting and implementing appropriate instructional technologies, faculty development, and assessing student learning.
- Advises on the effective use of distance education and learning technologies.
- Assists faculty, associate instructors, and SPH-B staff with Canvas; digital video production; training and course websites; classroom presentations; technology selection; and other projects. Works with SPH-B faculty and business units providing instructional design and digital resources production related services.
- Works in concert with SPH-B OOE leadership in the development of practices, procedures, and workflows in conformance with SPH-B strategic and operational plans to provide design and development assistance and direct support to staff, online students, faculty and graduate online programs.
- Supports SPH-B OOE in identifying, testing, and evaluating emergent digital learning tools (e.g. Top Hat, Quality Matters, Badging, etc.).
- Researches and identifies resources for instructional design, educational technology, and pedagogy.
- Develops digital assets such as videos, digital ads, social media testimonies and more, to accurately promote the School of Public Health-Bloomington as one of the top schools of public health in the nation.
- Represents SPH-B OOE in SPH-B professional, teaching/learning community projects and initiatives, conferences, workshops and meetings related to online course design and development.
- Maintains currency with the leading edge of online course design and models of online course delivery. Collaborate with team members to create workshops, job aids, seminars, and other resources.
- Contributes as needed to graduate online student onboarding initiatives.
- This position is a split assignment with instructional design and digital production responsibilities.
- Supports SPH-B OOE leadership in delivering best practices used in the SPH-B OOE’s course design quality assurance initiative and support of staff/faculty in the creation of digital assets and the use of technology in administrative processes and online teaching and learning.
- Decisions by this position will have a direct impact on how the school audits, evaluates, implements, and supports online learning.
- Responsible for supporting SPH-B OOE leadership in identifying and applying emerging instructional design approaches and digital resources productions which will continue to shape and impact the way the School of Public Health-Bloomington at Indiana University Bloomington conducts online teaching and learning, impacting both students and instructors.
- Plays a key role in supporting the SPH-B OOE leadership to execute its goal of providing effective, compliant, and accessible digital solutions for SPH-B. The Associate has a measurable impact on SPH-B OOE functions maintaining, measuring, and evaluating quality in digital resources production and the design and development of training and instructional products.
General Responsibilities
- Consults with faculty in planning, developing, initiating, testing, and using new and innovative approaches to learning, instruction, and assessment; recommends appropriate technologies in developing course materials, delivery mechanisms, and course/instructor/student assessments to support effective teaching.
- Serves as an information resource to faculty both in creating and conducting online courses; conducts individual, small group, and large audience training sessions; develops, designs, and prepares workshop materials; supports faculty learning communities for key instructional technology initiatives.
- Provides instructional technology expertise and coordinates on selected initiatives as assigned; implements instruction design practices, procedures, and workflows in conformance with strategic and operational plans.
- Assists in the development of multimedia assets, such as web pages, videos, mashups, and audio presentations, for online courses.
- Contributes to quality assurance testing and requirements gathering for course management, portfolio, and collaboration systems.
- Researches and stays up-to-date with instructional design literature and other areas of related expertise.

- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in computer science, instructional technology/design, or related field)

- Some experience in instructional development and/or instructional technology consulting, and/or training, and/or teaching (face-to-face or online) or providing instructional design with online instructional technology, preferably in a higher education context

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
