Fishtank Learning is a growing education technology non-profit that is supporting teachers across the country with high-quality K-12 ELA and Math instructional materials. At Fishtank Learning, we believe that teachers and their students deserve access to the highest quality instructional materials. Our in-house curriculum team has spent the last decade drawing on their experience as classroom teachers to develop the Fishtank curriculum. We continually refine and improve our content and tools to reflect the best evidence-based practices and serve the evolving needs of teachers and students.

Fishtank Learning is growing rapidly and has built a five-year business plan aimed at scaling the organization’s impact to serve over 1,500 schools and 600,000 students, enhancing its core curriculum and implementation support offerings, and leveraging technology to offer a best-in-class digital curriculum experience.

Overview of Role

Fishtank is seeking an entrepreneurial and strategic leader to be our first Managing Director of Product. This critical role will provide dedicated leadership for three core areas:

  • The development and evolution of Fishtank’s digital platform
  • The management of Fishtank’s digital content operations
  • The strategy and development of Fishtank Student, our new student-facing platform

The Managing Director of Product will ensure Fishtank’s platform delivers a high-quality, intuitive user experience that supports teacher success and drives school adoption. They will oversee the product function, including platform development, user experience, data & research, and strategic vendor partnerships. Simultaneously, they will oversee the digital content operations, ensuring Fishtank’s curriculum is delivered effectively through the platform.

As the organization scales, this leader will bring strategic focus to how our platform meets educator and student needs, supports instructional goals, and integrates emerging technologies to keep Fishtank at the forefront of digital curriculum delivery. A key priority is the successful launch of Fishtank Student this school year and establishing it as a valuable instructional tool and market differentiator.

The Managing Director of Product will oversee the engineering team, the product management function, and manage key team members responsible for platform support and digital content operations along with external consultants, while also building and scaling Fishtank’s internal product team over time. A key focus will be leveraging innovative technologies, including AI-powered solutions, to enhance the platform’s capabilities and maintain Fishtank’s competitive edge.

Over time, this role will build and oversee Fishtank’s data and research function, using analytics and user insights to continuously improve the product and demonstrate impact.

While primarily internally focused, this role will also represent Fishtank in key meetings with partners, vendors, and at select conferences. Some travel (no more than four times per year) may be required.

This role reports directly to the CEO and will play a critical role in building Fishtank’s long-term product function and organizational impact.

Job Responsibilities

Product Vision, Strategy & Innovation

  • Oversee Fishtank’s product function, including platform strategy, development, UX, data & research, and vendor partnerships.
  • Own the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for Fishtank’s curriculum platform and digital content experience.
  • Lead the continued development of Fishtank Student, including supporting its launch, ongoing iteration, and long-term vision—ensuring it becomes a powerful instructional tool and a key differentiator in the market.
  • Identify and integrate innovative technologies, including AI-powered solutions, to enhance platform capabilities and maintain Fishtank’s competitive edge.
  • Stay informed about EdTech trends, competitor products, and innovations to ensure Fishtank remains competitive.

Team Leadership & Management

  • Directly manage the Senior Web Developer, the Curriculum Product Director, Platform Support Specialist, and external consultants.
  • Build and scale the internal product team over time by hiring new staff members and consultants and supporting their onboarding and development.
  • Oversee digital content management, ensuring seamless coordination between curriculum content, platform features, and user experience.
  • Facilitate the annual and quarterly planning process for the product and content management teams, maintain a detailed product roadmap, and plan and facilitate weekly product team meetings.

Data & Research and Product Execution

  • Lead platform development in partnership with internal teams and external tech vendors, ensuring alignment with educator needs and instructional priorities.
  • Build and oversee Fishtank’s data, research, and user insights function to understand how teachers and students engage with the platform, identify opportunities for improvement, and measure impact over time.
  • Conduct and oversee user research and market analysis to guide product design and prioritization.
  • Establish product development processes, documentation, and KPIs to track progress and impact.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Organizational Leadership

  • Collaborate with Curriculum teams to ensure platform features support instructional goals and teacher workflows.
  • Partner with the Implementation Support and School Partnerships teams to develop tools and features that enhance partner onboarding, training, and ongoing support.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Sales teams to ensure the product team provides the right resources and context to support the sales cycle and inform partners of platform enhancements.
  • Serve as a key member of Fishtank’s leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy, culture, and cross-functional initiatives beyond the scope of product.

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus.
  • 8–12+ years of product leadership experience, including at least 3 years managing product teams or cross-functional platform development, with a strong track record of success in product management in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Prior product management experience in SaaS and/or EdTech environments required.
  • Experience working directly with engineers to lead product development.
  • Expertise in user experience, SaaS metrics, and product development processes, including roadmaps, feature prioritization, and market-fit analysis.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders with exceptional operational management skills.
  • Strong people management skills with experience hiring, developing, and scaling high-performing teams.
  • Strong user empathy and commitment to understanding educator needs.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating AI technologies into digital products preferred.
  • Experience building or managing data and research functions, including identifying key user insights and data needs to inform product development and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of K-12 education systems, curriculum, and instructional design preferred.
  • Creative and resourceful problem solver with a bias toward action.
  • Self-directed with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in product management, design and documentation tools and systems (e.g. Jira, Confluence, Figma, etc.)

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $125,000- $160,000, depending on experience. Competitive benefits are available.
