Instructional Design, Supervisor

Position Summary:

We are seeking two (2) Instructional Design Supervisors that will lead and oversee a team of team leaders and instructional designers in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of engaging, innovative, and effective learning solutions. This role requires exceptional leadership skills to manage and mentor team leaders, as well as advanced technical expertise in instructional design to ensure the delivery of high-quality educational materials that meet the needs of learners and align with Southern Company’s strategic objectives.

Work Location, Schedule & Travel:

  • These positions will be based within our Southern Company territory (Atlanta, Birmingham, or Coastal Mississippi). No relocation assistance will be available.
    • One (1) position will provide supervision to the Instructional Design team responsible for creating content for Safety & Well-being and Technical Training (Non-Power Delivery).
    • One (1) position will provide supervision to the Instructional Design team responsible for creating content for Technical Training (Power Delivery). 
  • The team currently has a hybrid work schedule requiring the individual(s) to be in the office four days a week. Flexibility is incorporated, but the job could require more than four days in the office if necessary. 
  • This position will require approximately 25-35% travel (daytrip & overnight). 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Team Management: Provide leadership, direction, and support to a team of team leaders and instructional designers who create and maintain training curricula. Conduct performance reviews and encourage professional development. Supervise instructional design team leaders to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
  • Strategic Vision for Instructional Design: Ensure the strategic vision for the instructional design team is aligned with organizational goals and objectives. Oversee the design and development of instructional materials, including online courses, workshops, simulations, and other educational resources. Ensure materials are pedagogically sound, engaging, and aligned with learning objectives. Ensure consistency in both process and overall design across content, guaranteeing a standardized approach to training materials. Oversee the controlled library and a content review cycle to ensure that courses remain current and effective.
  • Project Management: Utilize Monday.com to track the completion of projects. Review key metrics and share with the leadership team the overall progress of instructional design. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Actively collaborate with subject matter experts, department leaders, and internal partners such as instructors and training facility managers to identify learning needs and develop effective training solutions. Foster strong relationships with stakeholders to ensure their input and feedback are incorporated. Communicate project statuses and solicit feedback regularly to ensure alignment with stakeholder expectations and organizational goals.
  • Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with other supervisors in training support to help shape the direction of the department. Participate in strategic planning sessions and contribute to the development of departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Innovation and Technology: Stay informed of the latest trends and technologies in instructional design and e-learning. Advocate for and implement innovative approaches and tools to enhance learning experiences.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in instructional design. 
  • Proficiency in e-learning and ILT authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, PowerPoint), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and multimedia production tools. 
  • Strong understanding of instructional design models (ADDIE) and learning theories.
  • Formal leadership experience, with proven abilities in team building, coaching, and conflict resolution. 
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing priorities. 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams, Forms, etc.).

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences. 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with a focus on critical thinking and innovative solutions. 
  • Knowledge and experience developing training for both IBEW covered and non-covered employees preferred.
