We are seeking an experienced and innovative Director of Instructional Design, Quality Assurance to lead our comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) department for all offered ASU Online courses. Every day you’ll make a difference in the lives of others by creating and implementing a robust, innovative and effective framework to ensure the quality, effectiveness, and accessibility of online courses. You will work collaboratively with EdPlus departments, ASU Provost, Faculty, Instructional Designers, and Leadership to develop and uphold standards of excellence in course design, learner experience, and instructional integrity.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and Implement a Quality Assurance Framework: Review current QA workflows and redesign/establish a QA process and guidelines to evaluate and enhance the instructional design, accessibility, and usability of online courses.
  • Lead the Quality Assurance Team: Recruit, train, and manage a team of quality assurance specialists, instructional designers, and evaluators.
  • Conduct Course and Program Reviews: Design, implement, and manage ongoing course and program reviews using Quality Matters and other QA processes to enhance course quality.
  • Coordinate Quality Assurance Training and Outreach: Work with academic units, faculty, and EdPlus/EDL staff to develop and promote scalable processes for program and course quality assurance. Organize presentations, workshops, and webinars to support faculty and instructional staff.
  • Stay Informed on Industry Best Practices: Maintain expertise in online program and course quality control, assurance, and enhancement by staying current on relevant literature and emerging trends.
  • Represent ASU at Professional Organizations: Serve as ASU’s representative in state, regional, and national organizations, councils, and committees related to online learning and quality assurance.
  • Assessment and Continuous Improvement: Analyze student feedback, performance data, and QA review results to recommend enhancements and improvements.
  • Technology and Innovation: Identify and integrate emerging technologies and instructional tools that enhance course quality and student engagement.
  • Training and Professional Development: In collaboration with ASU Provost, design and deliver training workshops on best practices in online course design and quality assurance.
  • Compliance and Accessibility: Ensure online courses comply with accessibility guidelines (e.g., ADA, WCAG) and university policies.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the strategic vision of ASU’s instructional design initiatives and ensure alignment with institutional goals.
  • Other duties as assigned: Take on additional projects or responsibilities as needed to support the mission of ASU Online.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
  • Experience in leading quality assurance initiatives for online learning and delivering this with creative, innovative, and scalable solutions to ensure success.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of historical and new instructional design principles, online learning methodologies, and adult learning theories.
  • Experience working in large-scale online learning environments.
  • Evidence of familiarity with quality assurance models such as Quality Matters (QM), and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) and digital learning tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles, methods, and techniques, as well as emerging pedagogical enhancements and technological learning solutions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analytics for learning assessment and quality improvement in online course offerings.         
  • Experience in faculty development and training in online education best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices pertaining to the assigned department, as well as budget management methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise of strategic planning principles and practices, project management, organizational management practices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in problem solving and decision-making, planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities, effectively leading, coaching and managing performance of assigned staff.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online instruction and information technology rules, regulations and guidelines.

Salary & Benefits:

$94,300 – $115,000 per year; DOE

Working Environment:

Your desk will be in the beautiful, cutting-edge, and collaborative workspace at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The Center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required, along with the ability to clearly communicate in English to perform essential duties.

EdPlus at ASU supports flexible work options, ranging from alternate work schedules to hybrid remote work schedules, subject to approvals per ASU policy. (This is NOT a fully remote position.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and seven (7) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
