Overview

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is looking for a talented Instructional Designer to join our expanding technology training team and help New Yorkers improve their digital literacy. This position is for someone interested in community development through education. The Instructional Designer creates and updates learning materials, provides professional development for staff, and assesses impact of programs. The incumbent will support adult learners with diverse cultural, educational, and professional experiences pursuing technical upskilling. NYPL offers technology classes, both online and in-person, at more than 80 libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Topics include MS Office, Internet basics, coding languages, graphic design, 3D printing, audio production, video production, podcasting, and more. 

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:

  • Curriculum development, including designing instructional guides, technical documentation, and multilingual accessible learning materials for patrons

Teach:

  • Best practices to staff who lead tech programs at their branch

Learn:

  • New and emerging technologies to be incorporated into the department initiatives and the classroom/computer lab setting

Improve:

  • Processes for peak efficiency as well as library patrons’ learning experience and knowledge of emerging technologies

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:

  • Onboard, visit branches, interact with stakeholders including Library Managers and create goals with their manager

3 months, this person will:

  • Contribute to departmental projects and provide instructor-led tech classes as needed

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Initiate outreach with potential partners/organizations, identify and provide solutions for gaps in service and support NYPL initiatives

Responsibilities: 

  • Support implementation of digital literacy curriculum for a variety of modalities, platforms, and scales, leveraging emerging educational technologies
  • Create project management workflows and technical documentation for curriculum development cycle
  • Manage professional development for staff teaching tech classes
  • Use effective classroom training techniques, promoting active learning, adapting instruction to meet the needs of learners, and encouraging individual practice
  • Assist with program metrics analysis including survey data to assess impact and compile reports
  • Develop patron-centered learning experiences in collaboration with team
  • Growth mindset when receiving and incorporating feedback from leaders and peers
  • Teach public-facing tech classes as needed
  • Travels throughout Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx as needed
  • Perform other related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of additional related experience

Required Experience

  • 2+ years of experience teaching, instructing and/or training adults technology or related programs

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of educational technology and tech trends with a strong aptitude for learning emerging technologies quickly
  • Knowledge of pedagogical concepts, research in the learning sciences, and data analytics 
  • Ability to teach in both traditional classroom and virtual classroom setting
  • Extensive experience using Macs and Windows machines
  • Experience using learning management systems
  • Familiarity with programming concepts and techniques
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to communicate authentically across all organizational levels; must be adept at active listening and building collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Familiarity with communities being served, with knowledge and understanding of local needs and resources
