As the Instructional Designer & Trainer supporting Property Operations, you will create practical learning experiences that help our frontline employees build the knowledge and skills they need to perform successfully in their roles. You will play an important role in onboarding new employees, helping them become confident and productive more quickly while creating greater consistency in how employees learn Essex’ processes and standards. You’ll develop instructor-led training, virtual instructor-led training, eLearning, job aids, videos, and other performance-support resources. You’ll also facilitate training both in person and virtually using Zoom. Some learning needs will be planned. Others will emerge quickly as Property Operations respond to changing business priorities. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable moving between the two—someone who can develop thoughtful learning experiences while also rolling up their sleeves and producing effective training on a short timeline when the business needs it.
This is a learning design and training role, not an LMS administration role
What You Will Do:
- Design, develop, facilitate, and continuously improve onboarding, role-based training, and ongoing professional development programs for Property Operations employees.
- Create engaging learning solutions, including instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (VILT), eLearning, videos, job aids, reference materials, and blended learning programs.
- Facilitate interactive training sessions both in person and virtually using Zoom and other learning technologies.
- Manage the full training lifecycle from needs assessment and content development through delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with Property Operations leadership and Talent Development to translate business needs and operational priorities into effective learning solutions.
- Analyze learner feedback, training effectiveness data, and operational performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Recommend instructional approaches, curriculum enhancements, learning technologies, and performance support tools that improve employee effectiveness and business outcomes.
- Build and maintain learning content using tools such as Articulate Storyline 360, Articulate Rise, Adobe Creative Suite applications, Camtasia, Canva, and PowerPoint.
- Utilize Zoom functionality effectively, including breakout rooms, polling features, screen sharing, learner engagement techniques, and basic troubleshooting.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to learning tools, training processes, and instructional practices to increase scalability and effectiveness.
- Exercise sound judgment and initiative while managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, policies, and applicable laws and regulations, including Fair Housing, Landlord-Tenant regulations, Local Building Codes, OSHA, and EEOC requirements.
- Embody Essex’s mission, values, and commitment to creating an exceptional employee experience.
What The Job Requires:
- 3+ years of experience in instructional design, learning and development, training development, organizational development, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience designing and developing instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (VILT), blended learning, and eLearning solutions.
- Experience facilitating training programs for adult learners in classroom, virtual, or hybrid environments.
- Proficiency with instructional design and content development tools, including Articulate Storyline 360, Articulate Rise, Adobe applications, Camtasia, and/or Canva, and similar learning technologies.
- Strong PowerPoint skills with the ability to create clear, engaging, and professional learning materials.
- Experience using Zoom or similar virtual learning platforms to facilitate and support live training events.
- Working knowledge of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, and learner engagement best practices.
- Ability to quickly learn business processes, systems, and workflows and translate complex information into effective training content.
- Strong project management, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and build relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess learning needs and recommend practical solutions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with business technology systems and practices.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently, and continuously improve learning programs and processes.
- Passion for employee development, operational excellence, and creating a positive workplace culture.
- Ability to work Monday through Friday in a hybrid work environment, including a minimum of four in-office days per week (Monday through Thursday) at Essex’s Irvine Corporate Office. Hybrid work arrangements are subject to change at Essex’s discretion.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods throughout the workday with minimal physical exertion required.
What You Will Bring To The Table:
- A learner-focused mindset with a passion for creating practical, engaging, and impactful learning experiences.
- The ability to balance long-term curriculum development projects with urgent business training needs.
- Strong facilitation presence and confidence leading both in-person and virtual training sessions.
- Creativity and innovation in designing learning solutions that drive employee performance and engagement.
- A consultative approach to partnering with business leaders and stakeholders to solve performance challenges through learning.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality learning experiences.
- A collaborative, customer-service-oriented approach and strong commitment to Essex’s values and culture.
