Title: Learning Designer and LMS Specialist

Reports to: AVP for Continuing Education 

Position Summary:

The Learning Designer and LMS Specialist creates engaging and outcomes-driven learning experiences by leveraging innovative instructional design methods for the NYBG Continuing Education team with the primary goal of creating excellent, impactful programming for audiences as well as delivering the high level of customer support needed to achieve this goal. This position manages the learning management system and supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of learning and collaborative technologies for the NYBG Digital Learning initiative within NYBG Continuing Education.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with NYBG staff to identify, analyze, explore, and meet NYBG’s teaching and learning technology needs.
  • Lead Digital Learning staff member who engages with IT partners to administer digital systems and software platforms to support NYBG Education, with a specific focus on Continuing Education.
  • Creates engaging and outcomes-driven learning experiences by leveraging innovative instructional design methods to adapt new or existing content for asynchronous courses.
  • Oversees and performs Canvas administrative functions such as user and course management, testing, and reporting.
  • Supports implementation and ongoing maintenance of LMS integrations.
  • Works with Education and Digital Learning staff and instructors to create, develop, and maintain templates, courses, and content.
  • Works with Education and Digital Learning staff to build Canvas sites for online and blended courses and is responsible for technical aspects of course development and implementation.
  • Collaborates with AVP for Continuing Education, Continuing Education staff and other departments as needed to develop and operationalize effective workflows; create support and process documentation; and provide training and support to instructors and staff.
  • Provide Canvas group and 1:1 training sessions for instructors, students, and staff.
  • Provides exemplary customer service to staff, instructors, and students needing assistance with technology-related issues in Education.
  • Facilitates problem escalation for teaching and learning tools and works with Digital Learning staff and vendors to resolve issues with learning and collaborative technologies.
  • Keeps current with research and developments in the field of online learning.
  • Supports the evaluation and use of new technologies and their impact on learning outcomes.
  • Supervises and collaborates with contractors, as needed.
  • Establishes and meets milestones for all major projects.
  • Keeps current on best practices in instructional design.
  • Other related tasks may be assigned to fulfill the role, as needed, and as programs develop over time.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in educational technology, instructional design, or education. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience as instructional or academic staff in an educational or museum environment
  • Experience with educational technology required; experience with Canvas, Zoom, or Kaltura preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills, and strong and effective interpersonal and communication skills with diverse constituencies
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively in project planning, implementation, and assessment
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering training and support in multiple modalities
  • Experience with video editing tools/video production preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with data management practices
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and universal design principles
  • Demonstrated commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access in Education
  • Familiarity with botany, horticulture, landscape design, botanical illustration, or related fields preferred
  • Available weekends and evenings, as needed, for special events or to help monitor synchronous online courses

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, sit and use a computer for extended periods of time.

Baseline Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday 9am-5pm 

Salary: $75,000
