Job Description:

The W. P. Carey School of Business (WPC) at Arizona State University seeks an Instructional Designer to join the Online Academic Services team to assist with instructional design and support for all current and future learning modalities.  This instructional designer (ID) will work with the Department of Finance.  Working closely with colleagues, this position will work closely with the Faculty Teaching Lead in the department along with other leaders on specific strategic needs and initiatives.  The successful candidate will help WPC push the current boundaries in using instructional technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience. 

Under general direction, the candidate will assist our academic and non-academic departments, faculty, and staff in the design and development of course materials that take advantage of instructional technologies and apply effective practices in teaching and learning. 

Instructional Designers for the W. P. Carey School of Business establish strong, trust-based relationships with faculty and staff to efficiently and accurately build and support courses in all learning modalities.

The candidate will use a broad knowledge of educational technology and instructional design coupled with strong creativity and entrepreneurship. The candidate will also utilize experience in online learning environments to develop course design models, course design metrics, and course facilitation metrics.

The candidate must have excellent collaboration skills and experience with various learning management systems (e.g. Canvas).  

Salary Range: $55,000 – $72,000; depends on experience

This position is not remote.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Essential Duties:

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to support WPC’s immersion and fully online programs, and courses;
  • Works closely and collaboratively with faculty and faculty teams to prepare courses for student success, using existing design templates and standard operating procedures;
  • Manages the design, development and delivery of online course content, materials, interactive and multimedia technology-driven components, and other support materials consistent with established design and development processes to ensure flexibility and reusability for all course modalities;
  • Coordinates production of instructional materials with subject matter expert (SME), graphic artists and multimedia developers; consults with clients on course design projects;
  • Provide technology support for faculty, students and staff using digitally-enhanced teaching and learning products. Assist in the support of the myASU/Canvas portal and course management system;
  • Provides consultation for faculty in instructional design of curriculum delivered online;
  • Develops and/or maintains online web-based resources such as tutorials, reference material, design standards, content resources, templates and tools for instructional development
  • Works collaboratively with developers; editing, reviewing and evaluating course content; assisting with embedding and formatting learning objects; providing quality assurance testing for courses and post production work; adapts course materials online delivery;
  • Applies learning theory with instructional design methodology while utilizing appropriate technology to develop and design courses and content;
  • Remains abreast of technology directions, initiatives and trends within scope of expertise to provide ideas, guidance and recommendations;
  • Identify and communicate best practices for applying teaching and learning theories and instructional technologies to curriculum design;
  • Recommend effective and creative uses of technology to enhance instructional modalities;
  • Keep faculty informed about instructional-technology events and resources. Facilitate communication about use of technology in the curriculum;
  • Evaluate diverse individual and department training needs in the area of instructional technology, recommend individual education plans for faculty, and implement plans as needed;
  • Coordinate, maintain, and expand face-to-face and online faculty training and workshop offerings;
  • Design, develop and implement evaluation procedures to assess effectiveness of course designs and technologies in teaching/learning processes;
  • Utilize software such as web page development desktop publishing, video editing, and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs

  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design theory and methods
  • Demonstrated Experience in designing, developing, implementing and revising online courses and course materials in a higher education environment
  • Familiarity with the Quality Matters rubric or similar online course design metrics.
  • Experience in designing and developing job aids, online tutorials, lectures and other multimedia content
  • Designing and producing effective and aesthetically pleasing course and program websites, web graphics and web resources
  • Demonstrated knowledge of course development in Canvas
  • Experience in using HTML and HTML editors
  • Writing, proofreading and editing instructional materials
  • Experience in evaluating and implementing new technologies for use in online teaching and learning
  • Experience in project management (e.g. managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, meeting milestones and deliverables)
  • Experience in researching and resolving technology issues
  • Experience in applying learning theories to the practice of online and hybrid course design and development
  • Experience with audio and video recording and editing in the support of blended or online instruction
