Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Libraries and Academic Innovation (LAI) is the bedrock of scholarship and learning at GW. This position collaborates regularly with university faculty to plan for and design online courses, including, but not limited to, finalizing course goals and learning objectives, course alignment and outline, and plans for the use of media in the course. The Instructional Designer develops and facilitates the development of all course content, including course media, assessments, grading tools, learning activities, readings, and other course materials. The position may participate in the course review process, ensuring that all courses meet quality standards and that these standards are incorporated into the design of each course. In furtherance of our mission, the person hired for this position will possess a high degree of knowledge about instructional design theories, the rapidly improving understanding of human learning, and advances in hardware and software that can be used to improve teaching and learning as well as the production of modern online media, e.g., video recording.
This position reports directly to the Director of Online Education and also works with the Director of Faculty Development, and the Executive Director of Academic Enterprise Applications. The position has no direct reports but may schedule, train, or supervise student workers in their roles as instructional design assistants. Working in partnership with faculty, the Instructional Designer hired for this position will apply knowledge of learning science and instructional design models to design and develop high-quality learning experiences for students.
The Instructional Designer will:
Perform other duties related to the support of teaching and learning within Libraries and Academic Innovation. The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
