The Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD)
Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®) — ATD's flagship credential for experienced L&D professionals. Issued by the ATD Certification Institute (ATD CI) and now in its 20th year, the CPTD is one of the most widely recognized talent development credentials in the U.S. job market.
The CPTD is built for practitioners with at least five years of talent development experience and 60 hours of professional development in the past five years. It measures knowledge and skill application across the full breadth of the field — not just instructional design, but coaching, evaluation, technology, learning strategy, and organizational effectiveness.
The exam is based on ATD's Talent Development Capability Model, which defines 23 capabilities across three domains: personal capability, professional capability, and organizational capability. Candidates sit a three-hour standardized exam delivered through Pearson VUE at testing centers or online with remote proctoring. Recertification is required every three years through documented professional development.
For TD pros earlier in their careers, ATD also offers the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD®) — a foundational credential requiring three years of experience.
